Conditions Treated
Lymphoedema: is a chronic form of swelling and can affect any part of the body. There are many causes and they are split into 2 types:
Primary lymphoedema – occurs as a result of hereditary or genetic abnormalities that cause malformations of the lymphatic system and can be present at birth or develop later in life
Secondary lymphoedema – occurs as a result of damage to the lymphatic system, often following cancer treatment (surgery, lymph node removal and radiotherapy). It can also be caused by recurrent infection (cellulitis) and any type of trauma, such as accidents and burns
Lymphoedema is a long-term condition and if left untreated, can worsen over time and lead to other complications such as skin changes, cellulitis (infection) and lymphorrhoea (leaking lymph fluid). MLD, as a part of lymphoedema treatment, can reduce swelling, improve lymphatic flow, reduce pain and ache experienced and often improve mobility.
Other conditions that may benefit from MLD:
Manual lymphatic drainage can be adapted and applied to help improve other conditions, such as:
Lipoedema – a condition that usually only affects women and is characterised by an abnormal build-up of fat cells in the legs, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes the arms. MLD can reduce the fluid component (if present), and alleviate the ache and heaviness experienced
Post-operative swelling – from cosmetic surgery and liposuction. MLD can reduce swelling, scarring, bruising and inflammation and speed up recovery time
Fluid retention – from bloating to swollen ankles. MLD can alleviate the swelling by stimulating the lymphatic system
Sprains and strains – often caused by sports injuries. MLD can reduce inflammation and pain and promote healing
Chronic conditions – such as arthritis and sinusitis. MLD can reduce inflammation and pain and aid in decongestion
